2004 unlabeled Merlot (12 x 750ml), Manjimup by Calneggia Family Vineyards, 13.5% Alc/Vol, Every now and then we discover a hidden gem, tucked away in a cellar and just waiting for the right moment to be released. This premium, masterfully crafted red wine from the premium Manjimup region of Western Australia is one such wine. Discovered recently during a routine stock audit, the 70 dozen wines represent a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully aged and cellared wine, an anomaly in this day of early releases to keep the bank manager happy. All the hard work has been done for you, time to pull the cork (yes it cork finished) and sit back and enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labour. Tasting Note: Brilliant clarity with a deep red with a fairly vibrant edge leading to quite a dark core very slight “brickish” colour but very sound for 2004. Complex bottled aged cool area red, slightly earth but not funky, perhaps more pot pourri, not leafy or mean but mint and eucalypt over aged linoleum. Possibly some Brett but in control. Dry and light to medium bodied, with initial flavours of dark chocolate and dried plum with some slightly green flavours, perhaps dry land stressed fruit character. Mouthfeel is slightly austere not particularly giving with a strait and slightly un-giving flavour though the wine to the finish. The tannins are very well managed and quite fine. The wine finishes with a slightly watery end without a great deal of fruit or rich tannin persistence but finishing with that same clove - herbal character. The wine is very well balanced with very without any angularity. balanced and overall the wine is very well made – in a way, quite a curio for its elegance and fine palate. The feature of the wine is the elegance and balanced tannins over fruit that, to me, was stressed and without a real lot of depth and power. The wine has been made by a skilled winemaker from second selection fruit with some good oak. As a wine for cult buyers the wine should achieve a retail price of around $35, although the winemaking is faultless and the wine is , I believe as good as could be made from the fruit at hand
